How does a Pneumatic Level Controller Work?

liquid level controller

A pneumatic level controller works with a control valve to provide liquid level control in oil and gas production.

Producers typically employ these controllers on production vessels like horizontal and vertical three-phase separators. Some also use them on two-phase separators, gas dehydration systems, and free water knockouts.

How a Pneumatic Level Controller Works

In a pressurized vessel, you can tube the controller to draw supply gas from the vessel or an air compressor.

The level controller uses a displacer connected to the controller to sense the liquid level. The displacer sits in the process fluid inside of the separator.

  • When the liquid level increases and the displacer reaches a high set point, the level controller sends a pneumatic signal to open the control valve.

  • When the liquid level decreases and the displacer reaches a low set point, the level controller removes the pneumatic signal to the valve and switches to vent. This allows the gas inside the valve actuator to vent through the level controller, which closes the valve.

This can work with low or high pressure pneumatic control valves.
